2017 January Update

Softball Parents 

We are quickly closing in to the start of the softball season.  We have been dealing with weather over the last few weeks so I appreciate everyone's patience with the schedules.  

Below are some general updates on program:  

PE Schedule

We will only meet this week (T/TH) for PE.   With weather, I dont see us on the field until maybe Thursday.   We will not meet during finals. Once semester ends, we will start team practices on Tuesday 1/31.  Each coach will reach you on a schedule.  Once the semester ends, PE ends.  

Clearance 
Our date to clear from the school is 1/31.  Each player will get a handout tomorrow that they will need to fill out and bring back on the 31st from 2-3 pm to finance to clear.  All the details will be on the handout.  You have to clear to practice.  

Uniforms
Order have been turned in.  There are no refunds now that the order was placed.  Therefore, if you have not sent in your uniform fee, please do so now.  You can pay by check or off the webstore.    New varsity player uniforms are $300 and Varsity retunrer/JV is $200.  You will keep all clothing.  

Game Schedules
2017 Game Schedules are online and attached to this email

There are winter scrimmages and they are listed on the schedule.  Tomorrow's game was cancelled.    Please take note of the games times and schedule accordingly.  

Varsity will be playing 
Feb 18th at Chino HS at 12:00 pm vs Santiago HS and 2:00 pm vs Chino Hills.  If we need additional players we will pull some from JV as some may be in travel games.  But I wanted to pass on the date now so you can mark it down. 

Field Day
We want to schedule a field day to work and clean up the field.  We will need help on the bullpens, too.  We are looking to do this Feb 4th at 8 am.  If you can depend a few hours, please come and we can use the help

Jami Goldman Talk

On Jan 5th, Jami Goldman of Challenged Athletes Foundation came and spoke to the players - it was a great talk and I believe most girls got something out of it.  She did leave behind a couple copies of her book so if anyone that would like a copy, please let me know.  Cost is $20.  Additional info on her can be found at

Fall Donation:
Fall PE donation is now due - cost was $50 - please pay by check or via the website.  

Thank you to all that have paid as it covers the cost of fall tournaments, equipment and conditioning with Monica.  

Spring Donation:
Spring donations are now needed to cover the main costs of our program.  We ask that all Spring donations be completed by 
February 15th.  

We are 100% dependent on donations to keep this program in place.  Your spring donation helps to cover field repair & maintenance, equipment, coach pay, insurance, pre-season tournaments, umpire fees.  

The spring donation for varsity is $400 and the spring donation for JV is $350.  Players who make their contribution will receive a GameDay Shirt and the player's banquet ticket is included in the spring donation.  Families of players who have made their spring donation will also receive a discounted banquet ticket.  

Field supplies are being purchased in the next few weeks and this includes field paint, balls, helmets, field sand and seed, nets, etc and your donation funds these expenses.  

Banners 
Again, selling one banner covers the donation costs from above.  Easy to secure and all proceeds help the program.  Information is on the website.

Bowling Fundraiser April 30th

Bowling Fundraiser - 4/30 at 5 pm

 

  • We will be having our first bowling fundraiser on April 30, 2016 at 5pm at Fountain Valley Bowling Alley. As you may be aware, due to unprecedented budget cuts, high school sports programs no longer receive funding from the State of California, or the school districts.  Our program is funded through our parent donations and booster club fundraising activities.  Funds are used for field maintenance, field improvement, equipment, fencing and the list goes on. Every player is expected to participate in this fundraiser as we need to work together to achieve our goal of raising $16,000 for our program. This money will go towards purchasing a golf cart and for needed fencing on our fields. As a player in the program, we need you to participate in this fundraiser in the following ways.


Player Responsibilities
*In order to bowl in this fundraiser you must have at least $100 in sponsorships.  The more sponsorships the better!

*Each player is responsible for obtaining a minimum $25 dollar donation from a local business to go towards our silent auction. Your other option would be to donate a gift card or a bottle of wine. We are having a wine pull at this event so a nice bottle of wine would be appreciated. All donations are due by April 20th.

*We are also looking for businesses to help sponsor a bowling lane. The cost to sponsor a lane is $100. The sponsor’s ad will run digitally for one week at the bowling alley and a year on our website. We need a minimum of ten businesses to sponsor a lane. The money for businesses is due by April 20th.

2016 Carew Tournament Update

Hi Coaches,
        Please find attached the info you have been waiting for!  Now for some editorial comments-------
         This was really difficult with 19 teams in school this week, and only 13 available to play in the mornings or midday.  Thanks to Norco, Kennedy, and Org, Lu, who agreed to 1 pm games in the first 2 rounds, I was able to balance the brackets.  Even so, everyone needs to be aware that there is a likelihood they might have to play 3rd round as early as 1 PM on Friday 4/8.    Just no way around it, sorry.......
           These are the factors I use to bracket the field as much as possible"
1)  League opponents are at least in opposite quarters
  2)  You don.t open with someone you have opened with  at the                   Carew in the last  couple years----BUT I cannot help it if you                 meet the same people elsewhere in other tournaments!!!!!!!!
        If they beat you before----go get payback!
3)  Seeding considerations---
         Recent success at the Carew, returning pitchers/ other stars, recent CIF achievements,  graduation losses,  projected 2016 success
4)Availability to play before 3 PM
5)  Out-of-area teams that cant arrive before Thursday AM

      Ideally, everyone would get an opening DH on the first day.  It just wouldn't work with the 19 teams in school, so several will play one Wed with a follow up Thursday.  I tried to keep it to teams that were relatively nearby, but in order to have equitable matching of opponents I couldn't do it for everyone.   (At least if you play one each day, your pitcher can throw both------lot harder in a back-to-back)


        We are happy to welcome
Canyon del Oro-----a perrennial top team in Arizona,  and Mater Dei of San Diego----the CIF runnerup in the Open Division of their CIF     Cienega again won their Arizona D2 state title  . Norco sports their 2015 D1 title, as does Amador Valley from the bay area.  Mission Viejo is on hand to defend their 2016 Carew Championship.  Poway was runnerup here, and went on to win the CIF  Open down south.........League Champs are everywhere----would you believe SIXTEEN-----throughout the bracket.  This year will rate with every past year with top-notch, enjoyable competion.  Great teams may lose 3 of 5 here, yet go on to win their league or CIF.  It happens year after year, which is why you guys show up to test your mettle!

         Your entry fees help us to afford temporary fences at Peralta, and once again we have web radiocasts by
SPORTSNETUSA.NET.   This feature is great for your homefolk who cannot make the trip, and also contributes to our tournament   (IMHO) as the top high school tournament at least on the West Coast.  Each year you will find our finalists listed in the top five of CalHiSports and other rating publications.  Notice that 8 California teams were in the final state Top Twenty, and the 2 from Arizona were state #3 & #4.

         
I am attaching a list of our entries, noting their 2016 accomplishments as best I could put them together-------sorry if I mis-stated data for anyone.  Just trust me--------if you are at the Carew, you can play the game!
